TGK observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is here! Though it is most well known for its culmination in Halloween, October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Most of us are affected by or know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, myself not excluded. I lost my 59-year-old mother, Ann, to breast cancer in August 2012.

Some women may think they are in the clear, but the odds are not favorable. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

Self exams and annual doctor exams are the first steps in early detection, which are essential. But even if you do everything “right,” you may not be in the clear. Such was the case with my mother, who always had two mammograms a year instead of the recommended one. Her breast cancer was not diagnosed until it metastasized to her brain; at that point it had already reached Stage 4.

Clearly the need for continued research is dire, which is why The Green Kangaroo plans to do its part to help. A portion of our October proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research. Every order will make a difference, including yours! We hope you can help us build a generous gift, to support the fight of loved ones living and to honor the memories of loved ones lost.

Tell us how you have been affected by breast cancer — we would love to hear your story.

This is such an important cause and it’s nice to be a part of helping to find a cure.

I was close to someone who was diagnosed several years ago and it was painful to see how the disease affected her and her family and friends. It takes its toll in tiring ways for everyone involved. Fortunately, she made a full recovery!

Just last week, however, I learned that another friend has been diagnosed and will start treatments immediately. She is even younger than I am and it is scary to think that this really can happen to anyone.

Thankfully, every little bit helps and I’m certainly happy to work for a company that cares and will be contributing to the cause!
